So, I just saw the Kia Optima/Blake Griffin commercial. Proof the dunk contest was rigged and planned out way ahead of time. What a joke.

Wait, so you didn’t even realize this when you watched it live? Are you actually surprised that All-Star Weekend is just one giant commercial? Did you just find out that Dad eats the cookies you leave out for Santa?

Agadez, Niger

The mud-brick minaret of the Grand Mosquee in the Agadez is arguably Niger’s most famous landmark.

Agadez, a small town on the southern edge of the Sahara Desert, grew up as a trading town on the nomadic Tuareg trading routes, and camel caravans still pass through in their journeys across the desert to trade wares and collect supplies. Today it is also one of Niger’s main tourist destinations, popular for the rambling mud-brick architecture of its old town, the dramatic Sudanese-style minaret of the Grand Mosquee, and as a launching-spot for adventure treks by camel or four-wheel-drive into the spectacular Aïr Mountains and the rolling dunes of the Tenere Desert. The Sudanese style, showcased most famously in Agadez’s sister town of Timbuctou (Mali) and the UNESCO World Heritage Djenne Mosque (also Mali), similar architecture can be found across the Sahel, as far east as central Sudan and as far west as western Mali. The Grand Mosquee in Agadez has been there for centuries, although the current incarnation of the minaret dates to around the middle of the 19th century, and is about 5 stories high.

bambino is a muslim tuareg musician from niger. he’s been hooking up with a boston area filmmaker for some time now and is supposedly gonna be the subject of a spin-off documentary based on a larger work about the tenere desert peoples of niger/southwest sahara. apparently he’s exiled to burkina faso these days.

here’s the filmmaker’s site with vids/photos/info: http://web.me.com/zerogravityfilms/bambinoafrica-_May/Niger_Shoot.html

download “guitars from agadez (volume 2)” to hear an album that is half studio recording, half electric live set recorded outdoors at the grande mosque of agadez (running entirely off a generator no less). this is really some of the most beautiful music i have ever heard & i’ll post my other fave track tomorrow. a dude i know named Lyle tipped me off to this guy and i’m eternally grateful~

edit: well i guess the movie was made in released as “Agadez, the Music, and the Rebellion.” here’s an updated page: http://www.bambinoafrica.com/ZeroGravity_Films/Omara_Moctar.html
